Hewlett-Packard (HP) and VMware, Inc. have decided to come together to deliver a federated network solution. This solution has been designed to provide customers with unified automation of, and visibility into, their physical and virtual data centre networks. It has been crafted with an intention to enable business agility and improve business continuity.
As companies hold cloud and mobility, manual network configuration has proven time and resource intense, as well as error prone. While Network virtualization offers a centralized control panel, but does not automate configuration and provisioning of physical network devices.
So, in a view to provide customers an integrated approach to automate their physical and virtual network infrastructure, HP-VMware have decided to federate the HP Virtual Application Networks SDN Controller with the VMware NSX network virtualization platform.
“Networks must be agile enough to enable the adoption of cloud and mobility while ensuring continuity,” said Raymond Maisano, country manager, HP Networking, Enterprise Group, HP South Pacific. Adding further, Raymond said, “Building upon our SDN leadership, the HP-VMware networking solution unifies visibility and automation of the physical and virtual network with a common control plane, enabling new application and service delivery in minutes rather than months.”
In this joint network solution, the HP Virtual Application Networks SDN Controller will also include support for VMware Open vSwitch Database (OVSDB) management protocol. This will enable HP FlexFabric top-of-rack switches to participate in the automated provisioning of the virtual network, which will be provided by the VMware NSX network virtualization platform.
HP also introduced two new programs named HP 5930 top-of-rack switch with built-in intelligence based on VXLAN technology and HP Converged software application. HP 5930 is designed to leverage the virtual and physical networks to work together as one entity. While HP Converged software application – running on HP Virtual Application Networks SDN controller unifies the visibility and control of the virtual and physical networks by leveraging the HP Intelligent Management Center (IMC).
Want to experience how this federated networking solution actually works and enables business agility while improving continuity? You will have to wait as HP 5930 is expected to be available worldwide in December 2013 while the HP-VMware networking solution and HP Converged Control are expected to be available worldwide in the second half of 2014.
