    XP with 3gb RAM?

Was thinkin of getting anothe 2 GB stick for my 311. Dont really feel like upgrading to Windows 7, just wondering is 3 gb "too powerful" for XP cause from what ive found everyone just says to "get windows 7 and increase RAM."

Im guessing itll still work, but just making sure that it wont overload and die on me lol.

    Shorter Version:

Can XP run 3gb RAM or maximum (total) 2 GB

    Re: XP with 3gb RAM?

With 3Gb the GPU will take 256Mb leaving 2.75Gb for XP which is fine.

You will be running the 32bit version of XP and that can use 2.75Gb for apps, so all good. If you have say 4Gb XP 32bit deals with this slightly differently but you don't.

So with 3Gb the GPU will perform better under harder use and XP will run better when you are running a few applications that require lots of RAM.

As this is a netbook then light use would not really use this extra RAM so 2Gb would be fine. I suspect the price difference is negligible.

The performance gains aren't really noticable on XP, and you do light work on your netbook anyways like PMS421 says, so the real question is, are you man enough for 3GB's of ram?

With extra RAM, I will disable the swap file first.

you will notice a performance increase even for simple tasks, since there will be less usage of swap-file.
you can not turn of swap file under xp completely. the minimum is 2MB, which is not a lot, admittedly, but since XP has the tendency to use the swap file despite enough free memory, it will increase it eventually
so you might as well set up a fixed size of 3 GB, that way the swap file won't defragment at least.
