US Keyboard Layout - Change to UK

Hi there - I'm running a Compaq Mini 702ea/60gb/2Gb with Mac OSX 1.6 for the first time the guides have been really useful and managed to create a fresh image (I bought the retail DVD, to comfort apple ), installed netbookinstaller, even messed about with the dsdt files in text editors to get sleep working so happy with hacking! For the life of me I cant figure out how to get the UK Keyboard Layout though. To type @ I have to use Shift/2 and " is Shift/Apostrophy etc so what am I missing? I selected UK/British in the welcome section of setup, and gone into system preferences and British is selected there. What do I do?

Any help would be appreciated
