For a coating, something like Plasti-Dip might give you a better finish than a spray. You can find it in many hardware stores.

How about buying some thin tubing and cutting it length wise to wrap it around the wires?
Another option could be wire shrink wrap, but would need a way to get it around the wires and it would probably be a bit too fiddly.
