Sound problem! Volume keys don't work, other sound problems

    Hey guys,

I'm an owner of a Compaq Mini 110c.
I'm having some audio problems with 10.5.8

I can't control the audio with the volume keys (when i press it, the volume GUI appears, but even if I mute it, the sound continues).

If I change the volume via the volume mixer, nothing happens to... but, there's a volume little low on the pc...
I tested with external speakers, and there's some volume, but distorcable... maybe audio drivers problems...

    How can i fix it?

Most probably you're using VoodooHDA.kext which currently is, as far as I know, the only way to get audio on the HP Mini's and Compaq's. However, that driver is still in its beta stage and one of the known issues is volume control; neither the normal function key combinations nor the menubar volume ctrl gui work.

But the Mini's speaker is pretty good and if I get my facts right, its got Altec Lansing under the hood which has no probs filling my room when I play songs on iTunes on it.

Try going to System Preferences > Sound. Adjust volume manually via the slider.

or System Preferences > VoodooHDA PrefPane (if you don't have it installed, you can download from the voodoo site) and adjust settings.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks man!
I was using maybe a outdated version of the sound driver, i don't know...
But then, i downloaded the driver from the website that you told me, installed it, and now the sound is with the good quality...

Only the hotkeys aren't working, but that is a known issue as you told me...
    Thanks for the help!

The only problem that i figured out is that when the OS X sleeps, the sound go away...
But that i resolved using the InsomniaX... now the computer doesn't sleeps anymore, thanks to the old gods.

WOW.....I am going to make everyone feel like a retard.

This is not a complete fix, but it brings volume to full! and lets the function keys adjust the volume.

The simplicity of the task at hand is unbelievably easy.

    1) Go to your systems preferences go to sound.
2)Go to output, then change the levels of each audio device to MAX
    3) As a final move select Analog PCM #0 PCM and select this are your primary sound device.

Now your function keys work....and you have volume adjustment capabilities.

Issues: The sound adjustment keys only seem to really work in the upper 5 steps of volume control, mute still not working. But its better than nothing.

    Cheers,
    Nihiriju

Well Im sorry to say but if you have spent any amount of time at all with the voodooHDA.kext files you will quickly learn this is not as easy as all that.

I have in the last three days tested four different VoodooHDA versions and some have had simply "SPEAKER" listed in the system Preference pane. Others have in fact listed the PCM #0 PCM along with several others. If the user has the same build as yours the statement stands true but otherwise things tend to get a little blurry.

The latest VoodooHDA files (2.22) did not preform well for me on the 1035nr. I had to install under root as the pref pane gave me memory mapping errors when tried via a standard user log in. Sound was awesome but volume keys were mia and still no mic functions.
Only tried them to see if the mic can be made to work, so far this still eludes me.
So I rolled them back to 2.1 as this gives me good results with volume controls.
    Later

Re: Sound problem! Volume keys don't work, other sound problems

Hey guys, I tried this VoodooHDA version from insanelymac. It fixes volume keys - well, partially that is. When I get to about halfway down the bar, I can no longer hear anything; it's sort of like muted already. But it goes back up normally when I pump up the volume on full swing.
It saves me from digging in Sys Pref to adjust PCM etc.
PS. You won't need VoodooHDA prefPane for this. I think it's best that you set your volume as high as it can be via Sys Pref > VoodooHDA > PCM or something. Then install the new kext. Reboot and uninstall VoodooHDA prefPane.
