    Reinstalling Windows XP

    Hi all,

After going through various guides and undertaking a number of google searches during the past two hours, I am now here to seek help when it comes to formatting and reinstalling Windows XP on the 311c 1010SA.

You can shout at me, point me to other web pages, tell me to do searches, but I am at a stage where I want a discussion where I'm practically on my knees and begging for help when it comes to reinstalling Windows XP. I want an opportunity to discuss this further and to find ways of getting past this.

Here's the situation, I tried slipstreaming the Nvidia Sata IDE driver to the Windows installation files as found in the C: drive of the Mini 311 (Entitled i386) using NNlite. I then tried bringing the windows files over to the USB pen drive using 'WinsetupfromUSB' but it didn't recognise the windows files as actual windows files, because the way HP have done it differs from an ordinary Windows XP disc (Assumption).

I tried placing the files onto the USB stick manually, then I stumbled upon a roadblock where I cannot enter into recovery mode so I can do the dos commands e.g. Cd.. dir/w, cd setup.exe, etc.

I would be really grateful if the community can help me as I would like to avoid purchasing an external cd drive as well as either Windows XP from HP or Windows 7.

    Many Thanks for listening.

    Re: Reinstalling Windows XP

I suppose the main problem has to be getting the system to boot into dos, so I can execute the commands to start the setup files.

It seems nothing will work unless I obtain the actual CD's themselves from HP, and so therefore I'm going to attempt to install Windows XP Professional onto it with one of my spare keys... So far I've slipstreamed nvidia onto it and it's currently undergoing wintoflash.

    Re: Reinstalling Windows XP

It seems like whatever I do ends up with a BSOD (Error: Stop: 0x0000007B (0XF78D2524,0XC0000034,0X00000000,0X00000000)

Windows Professional 32bit + Nvidia Driver Slipstream (Nlite) + WinToFlash = BSOD
    Windows Professional 32bit + WinToFlash = BSOD
Windows Professional 32bit + Nvidia SATA Drive on it's own + WinToFlash = BSOD

It seems like anything I do results in a BSOD!!!

    Re: Reinstalling Windows XP

I think I'm just going to give up and invest in an external cd drive!

I've spent around 6-7 hours now with lunch breaks, yet it's just not happening for me!

My most recent guide which I've been following has been this: http://forum.oqoasis.com/showthread.php?p=855

I've slipstreamed the two sata files from here (http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Operating- ... m-p/150207) before following the guide as above, and I'm still getting the bluescreen as mentioned previously.

I just don't understand why this is so complicated than installing Windows XP on any other system with a CD Drive and a Floppy Drive.I am frustrated at how complicated this can be when trying to do a full installation using simply a USB Stick!!

Sorry that this has turned into a rant even though no-one's offered their thoughts, but nevermind. I will get round this issue in someway or another... I think I'll give up tonight and continue this tomorrow.

    Re: Reinstalling Windows XP

I'll give you some advice. First of all for installing xp via usb the xp must be at least sp2. Check the usb drive, some of them are the cause of problems. Check that the xp cd is working properly, meaning all the files are still fine.
I myself have written the xp installation guide several times here, use search to find one, check that everything is done correctly.
    Good luck!

Thanks very much for the advice.

I'll bear this in mind for when I do decide to go for this again.

    Re: Reinstalling Windows XP

Ok, I've managed to install Windows XP Professional successfully.

    - Used Windows XP Professional with SP2 (As base)
    - Slipstreamed Nvidia IDE Driver only with Nlite (Using Guide: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Operati...SOD/m-p/114120
    - Copied files into USB Stick using WinSetupFromUSB

    During installation no more BSOD.

Thanks Whiteblade, for your kind advice about having to use SP2+ as the base.

1 Use hacked bios to switch SATA to compatibility mode
2 Make boot flash from any original or custom XP using any guide
    3 Setup

no drivers needed, but SATA NCQ is lost

    Re: Reinstalling Windows XP

I too am having to reinstall XP and am going round in circles trying to make it work.

I've followed the guides, slipstreamed the sata driver, integrated sp2/3 etc but it failes to recognise my key (it's a valid key as well) or hangs during install.

Got a few more thnigs to try but it's just so infuriating. I've installed OS's many times but this one is defeating me.

I've learnt that if you were to integrate SP2/3 using either Vista or Windows 7, then setup will fail to recognise your key.

The only way to do it is to slipstream and integrate SP2/3 in Windows XP! In my case I had to use my Windows XP which already had SP2 on instead of the Windows XP which didn't have SP on, and to just slipstream the IDE driver onto it. The reason why I have two XP Pro discs is because I misplaced the cd key for the one without SP and thus had to purchase another one which came with SP2.

I hope this clears things up for you.
