    pimp my XP ride........

    Mini fans

only had mine for a week - UK version Compaq Mini 702: 1Gb RAM, 60GB HDD, bluetooth, wifi, XP home. I have added the following and would welcome comments.....

swapped in 2 GB Kingston (£15)
4GB (£8) SD card in SD slot where eBoostr (4hours free or crackable) now resides, plus windows swapfile via control panel-system-advanced- performance-advanced: 2 GB apiece
windows temp & tmp directories on 160MB ramdisk (z) using Superspeed RamDisk Plus (crackable)
GMABooster to up the graphics core clock to 400Hz (free)
FreeRam XP Pro for occasional brain clearout (free)
    XP service pack 3

By the way, not that I can afford the price but System Information for Windows SIW (free) says the motherboard supports 4GB in a single stick – why are these so blasted expensive anyway? – not sure if XP Home would be able to use it all anyway. Advice?

Also use Mozilla, Firefox, Office 2003, Avira, Spotify, Windows Defender, Spybot, CCleaner – all free software.

Plus best fix for the ‘dark’ web-cam is to load Windows Live Messenger and adjust the brightness via the software rather than risk cracking any lugs taking it apart.

    Comments and criticism welcome……………..

DO IT! Go pop out the little piece of plastic that shades the camera. I was extremely nervous about doing it, but I am glad that I did. It didn't break anything and was well worth doing.

From what ive read...the memory addressing hardware on the mother board will not support more than 2gb. a 4gb stick my be recognized...but id suspect the machine would only make use of the first 2gb.

There is a feature in Ultimate Vista Tweaker that allegedly addresses the issue. However, I would make note that the Mini has RAM slot (so it can only do 2 GB unless you happen to be incredibly rich and have in your possession a 4GB single sodimm. If that Is the case I will be happy to kiss your ring)

well I have a couple of concerns given the cost of a 4GB sodimm, especially relative to the cost of the netbook in the first place (my 'tweaks' to date, a cheap SD card and have 2 GB upgrade, have been very cheap)

first - seems most 4GB sodimms have chips on both sides so it may not physically fit, or the cover wont close etc
second - will it be addressed? First up theres the BIOS recognition issue and secondly will a 32-bit OS such as XP home be able to see any of it.

I aint gonna buy, but if someone had temporary access to one to try it out, it might be interesting to find out. Thought only the Pope got his ring kissed........
