networking at home

Hi-

just got my hp mini 1116 a few days ago, would like to be able to access files from my desktop pc through a wireless router.

the desktop pc is connected to the router via a cable, the mini of course wirelessly.

I can see the other pc in the network, but can't browse it. I can see the mini on the desktop pc, but also can't browse it.

I disabled all firewalls and enabled sharing.

Any ideas? spent some time on google already, and the simplest things that should work don't seem to.

I suspect part of the issue is the "simple sharing" the mini uses but I don't know how to change it in this version of XP.

I recommend having the "other" machine host, and it is the only one that must have file sharing enabled. There are a few XP Services that must not be disabled on the visiting machine, more that must be turned on for the host machine, and it helps if they both have the same WorkGroup name.

If the Everyone account is disabled on the host machine (I am guessing that it is XP Pro if you can select other than Simple File Sharing), then there must be an user account setup on the host that has the same name and password as the one the visitor uses to gain access to the network share.

you're right, there's tons of posts about networking, but most of them deal with first time set up and not the finer details of "I can see the other pc in the network, I just can't browse it..."
