Microsoft has already said they will no longer limit the starter edition to only three applications at a time.

They will do whatever they need to do to maintain dominance and make the most money. Right now they're trying to make Windows 7 starter edition more appealing than Linux but less appealing than regular Windows 7.

Has anyone formulated any opinions as to which W7 SKU's will be most beneficial for the HP2140 etc?

Supposedly public pricing is supposed to be released mid - this month. Any news? I downloaded W7 RC and while I feel its a step up from Vista, the RC issue was stripped down. Reportedly the release's won't be so.

Anyone got anymore hoo ha 'bout all that starter stuff?

    Yep,

In the end, common sense ruled, and Microsoft dropped the three-simultaneous-app limit, as the Windows Team blog described on May 29.

    "It's all about the money."

An April 20 Wall Street Journal article states: "People familiar with the matter say Microsoft takes in less than $15 per netbook for Windows XP once marketing rebates are taken into account — far less than the estimated $50 to $60 the company receives for PCs running Windows Vista." (Snipped from Windows Secrets)

As many here have proved, our netbooks do NOT need the starter edition to run... I recently read where one has run W7 Ultimate on an Asus Eee PC 1000H right along during beta.

The biggest issue at this point is the 1GB ram limit in order to meet the "netbook" criteria that microsoft has set up. This keeps manufacturers from including more or their license fees increase.
