I want some opinions please....

I have a HP nmini 1000 running ubuntu 9.10, the full desktop version. I love it, after my desktop stopped working, I use the mini exclusively. At first I could never imagine it, going from dual 22" monitors to a 10.1". Well anyway, I updated the ram to 2gb, which of course anyone with one should do. I am also considering upgrading the ssd to a runcore 64gb. I have seen how much faster it runs and think it would be awesome. My question is, is it worth investing $220 in this netbook or would it be better to upgrade to an HP mini 311?

I'm thinking I can get $200 for this netbook from someone, at least $150. Then $200, what I was going to pay for the ssd. That almost adds up to the cost of the 311. I do think it would be cooler to have the 100 with the runcore, just the fact I "modded it out," but I need some voices of reason I guess.

The 311 is quite a bit bigger & heavier than the 1000... would that be a problem for you?

If not, the 311's higher resolution display and better graphics would probably make it a better general-use machine.

That being said, I would go with this:

Because you know that you are still going to want a SSD, even if you get a 311. :mrgreen:

Ya, the runcore would be cool, and I would probably just want it in the 311. Plus I have Ubuntu running so good on it. Well I am ordering the runcore, has anyone on here ordered on yet? Where is a good place to order one? What else can I mod on my 1000? haha

i was deciding the same thing. i went to check out the 311 in store and find it too big for a netbook. i already have a macbook and i wanted something more portable. i end up upgrading with 32gb runcore pro iv and added the 6cell battery. it add up to the same price as the 311. i notice a major improvement with startup.

Do you notice a difference besides the startup? From what I saw on youtube, it seems to open programs a lot faster and even do things on the web browser faster.

Opening ms office only take 3sec. web browsing is not much faster. still struggle in flash media. i personally think is worth the upgrade tho. go with 311 only if you're okay with the size.

Is the 311 even much faster?

I doubt a 5400rpm HDD will be anywhere near as fast as the Runcore... Video processing and video will be better on the 311, the 311 has a larger keyboard, and has a nicer screen.

The Runcore upgrade will radically speed up startup, launching apps, and shutdown. I use a ramdisk, so my Firefox is about as snappy as you can get with this particular atom. For word processing, powerpoint, a few old games, and surfing the net I think the Runcore was worth every penny. If you want to watch HD video then the 311 may be your ticket. You'll just need to wait longer than I do to boot-up, launch apps, and shut down.

It's always a compromise - unless you find the extra $$ to get a Runcore for your new 311.

I could get the runcore now, then get the ssd 311 down the road and swap out drives. Right, are they both the same interface?

I don't know for sure what the 311's HDD interface is - I think it is SATA I. Do you have an SSD in your 1000 now?
