Got a fix for you here.

Hit start, then type in regedit and hit enter. Accept the UAC prompt, and once the Registry Editor opens, open each of these in order:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    SOFTWARE
    Alps
    Apoint
    Tapping

From here, look for the value on the right with the name TypingInhibit. Double-click it, and change the 0 to a 1.

This does the same thing as what selecting the checkbox would do, only without having to make the checkbox appear.

I had this problem too until I stumbled upon an odd solution.

I bought the Logitech M305 wireless mouse with a micro receiver. Installed the included software. Changed the software from ALPS to Synaptic and had no better result. So I un-installed the Synaptic. I now do not have either the ALPS nor the Synaptic and now do not have any touch pad specific drivers just using the Logitech drivers that came with the mouse. The touch pad works perfectly fine but the touch gestures that were with the ALPS software are not available now (no ALPS drivers, duh?)

    To sum up:
No touch pad specific drivers or software
Using the Logitech M305 drivers that came with the mouse

Very odd but it seem to solve the problem!?!
