    Busy Day

I got a few parcels in the mail today which meant that I could start modding my 311 properly. I'd already upgraded the HDD to a 500GB drive and added 2GB of RAM. However I wanted it to look a bit different and to have WWAN onboard instead of needing to use a dongle.

First of all I installed the WWAN which after some messing about with drivers simply worked. The antenna doesn't get a signal when the lower cover is on the machine so I need to order a longer antenna to mount above the screen.

Then it was time for the visual mod. This involved a full strip down of my beloved week old mini but I think it was worth it. I used 3M Di-Noc carbon fibre sheeting. It's not real carbon fibre but looks and feels the same. It's reasonably tough but when heated with a hairdryer it becomes plibale and easy to work with.

This took about 90 minutes but it looks really good and removes the fingerprint magnet effect that the original cover has.

    Opinions?

    \Look great !

I bought the carbon material from Ebay (£6ish)

How do you finnish the edges and corners >?
Did you take the lid off to do it?
If so, did you tuck the material into the gap and then re-assemble ?

I am thinking of just trimming
Would your suggest trimming short or over the gap /?

    Heed, that's very nice!

I never had the guts to strip it down. Adding the bigger hard drive was enough for me.

Wow! the carbonfiber looks just perfect! I hate that "fingerprint magnet"

edit: Just ordered one myself , say, did you opened the lidfor better adjustment?

I took the top off the mini screen to do the corners. I heated the film up with a hair-drier so it went soft and pliable then stretched it around the corners of the screen then trimmed it on the underside of the lid. You could try trimming without putting it under the lip of the lid but I think it would give a poor finish.

Hope this helps. If you need any more info just let me know.

p.s. I didn't open the lid. Just used scalpel to cut the edges more precised.

as u can see i got the compaq 311 not the hp mini thats because i am from europe and bought the europe version xO
and this didn't took me like 90 minutes but like 30 but it is really really awsome =)
i am not a genius (i've done this the first time in my life and the Compaq Mini is the first "note" netbook for me =/ ) but it really is easy to put it on :P

before putting on the 3m di-noc
don't think i put it on it just like that i cleaned it before i put it on !
i just wanted to show the ugly fingerprints
so the advantages are :P no more fingerprints, stylish and u feel better if u touch it and work with it

    after

    after but a bit darker
